The Australian Ballet - CHROMA - Preview & Dress Rehearsal with Wayne McGregor - Part 1

Sydney you are one lucky town, not only do you have a beautiful harbour; when you go the the Theatre, the Opera, the Ballet; you get to head down to Circular Quay then, walking up along the waters edge you experience Utzon's beautiful vision, the Sydney Opera House with its soaring white sails poking out into the blue green water of the harbour and the deepening blue of the evening sky. All this even before enjoying your night of arts and entertainment. I don't think the experience of arriving at the Sydney Opera House is something I will ever be able to take for granted, it is just too special. And of course arriving is just the beginning of a special night.

Last night that was certainly the case as I was invited to the Australian Ballet's preview of  CHROMA the new triple bill of Contemporary Ballet and Dance in the Dame Joan Sutherland theatre at the Sydney Opera House; and extra special for me, as a member of the digital media I was permitted to photograph the show - every photographers dream come true! Chroma from which the program takes its name is being performed in Australia for the very first time, and Chroma's choreographer the UK's Wayne McGregor was on-hand to fine tune the performance to deliver the utmost fidelity to the ballet's season in both Sydney and Melbourne. This work is performed to an orchestral score of  'The White Stripes' music in collaboration by Joby Talbot and Jack White III and delivers for Chroma perfect musical energy.

ART TO SKY (2014) Premier Performance (dress rehearsal) by choreographer Stephen Baynes performed to the music of Piotr Tchaikovsky, a great ballet favourite  with costume design and stage concept by Hugh Colman, Lighting design by Rachel Burke. If you were there on Opening Night you will have had two premiers, one Australian and one World Premier, and that certainly makes for a pretty special night out.

Part 2 of The Australian Ballet - CHROMA will cover PETITE MORT (1991) by late 20th Century great Jirí Kylián; a modern ballet but with a more classical feel, at least that's how my companion Vivienne felt about it and I am not one to disagree.

Special thanks to the Australian Ballet for the inviting Street Fashion Sydney to the media preview of Chroma.

TRIWA Watch launch with Theo & Oscar - BELANCÉ Sydney

Wednesday night saw Street Fashion Sydney in good company with young gentlemen's clothiers Theo and Oscar, co-founders of  BELANCÉ menswear and accessories store in Paddington Sydney. I was also joined by vivalaViv's Vivienne Shui for the launch of Swedish Watch and Sunglasses design company TRIWA's, The Sort of Black GOLD collection and I think I have managed to work the limited edition watches into every picture.. one way or another! It was a very pleasant evening and I really enjoyed speaking with both Theo and Oscar who are certainly putting some much needed positive energy into the Paddington shopping strip, having started with a Pop-Up shop on Oxford Street and then setting up their stylish store at 8 William St just two months ago.

I took the gold Chrono 'Sort of Black GOLD' (sort-of because it comes with an organic Swedish black leather and a gold mesh strap) for a spin on my wrist, see below, and contrary to what I inadvertently wrote on my Instagram '#freebies' with me wearing the watch; what I meant was #freeBeers dear auto-correct, which is par for the course when attending a fashion event, well most events in Sydney. No I did not get a free watch. The lads also had wine and cider and a table full of Vivienne's favourite foods, Figs, Cheeses, Nuts, fabulous and fresh. I won't go into additional details about all the great designer items at the BELANCÉ store now; it's time for the TRIWA, The Sort of Black GOLD watch to shine!

Appropriating the Soy Sauce Sushi Fish - Ashiya at House of Cards.

If it's Friday night it must be China Heights; last night it also happened to be the end of Fasshiun week where people wearing designer clothes head to toe get photographed preening in the street and everyone pretends its 'Street Photography' of 'Street Fashion' which, of course, is the last thing it really is. Which is why I am never there - not that anyone asks anyway! Where you can often find me on the look-out for interesting fashion ideas, the kind I consider to be real street fashion - vis-à-vis putting together original looks from what you have in your closet or strewn around your room and not supplied by.. Where you can often find me looking for real street fashion is at indie gallery China Heights on Friday nights. The new exhibition program has cut back to monthly shows so unfortunately you won't find me there quite as often.

Ashiya yellow soy sauce sushi fish print skirt and bucket hat from House of Cards the label at China Heights - Photo by Kent Johnson - Street Fashion Sydney.
This divine outfit was spied at the current show up on the third floor but was captured just inside the entry to the C.H. building while the rain came down outside. Ashiya is wearing her own label House of Cards along with a white Tee from some goose who had to put thier initials DK on it just in-case it got mixed up in the wash. Its an american brand so I am only just a little surprised it does not have DK-NY on it..  But the white patterned bucket hat and the yellow shirt with the cute little soy sauce sushi fish print were designed by Ashiya and I love them & I do love the long sleeve tee as well. Thank you China Heights, thank you Ashiya, and thank you Kirin for the yummy Fuji apple and ginger cider!

Art & Men's Style at Memetico by Sam Rey.

As I keep saying Street Fashion Sydney is not an art review site blah blah blah but I do love art and so I do get to see quite a bit of it! Of it! And on reading the room notes to Sam's exhibition I discover that he had his own fashion label in Italy and had a "brief stint at The Factory with Andy Warhol" all of which sounds pretty exciting to me and a sure sign that there would be style a-foot at the opening which of course there was, I know this already because I was there and I photographed it, it all, well some of it all starting out with an artist at his opening portrait of Sam Rey himself.

I also reconnected with Robert pictured below whom I have not seen for years! We won't say how many, however Robert purchased the first art work I ever sold and also commissioned me to make a number of mirrors for his Hair Salons back-in-the-day. He told me he had made that lovely bright digital print shirt himself from fabric he had to dig out from the bottom of a pile at Spotlight! What a great shirt, well worth the digging and great to see you again.
